Los Angeles homeowners dealing with hard water have two main options: a traditional salt-based water softener or a salt-free water conditioner. Both address scale buildup — the primary damage hard water causes to water heaters, appliances, and plumbing in LA. But they work differently, cost differently, and suit different homes. Uses ion exchange to physically remove calcium and magnesium from the water, replacing them with sodium. The resin tank captures hardness minerals and periodically flushes them to drain during a regeneration cycle that uses salt and water.
Result: Genuinely soft water — you will notice the slippery feel on skin and excellent soap lathering immediately.
Uses Template Assisted Crystallization (TAC) to change the physical structure of hardness minerals, converting them into microscopic crystals that pass through pipes without depositing as scale. No minerals are removed from the water.
Result: Water that behaves like soft water in terms of scale prevention, but retains its mineral content and does not have the slippery soft feel.
